UM Study Shows Chinese Acupuncture Affects Brain's Ability To Regulate Pain
Acupuncture has been used in East-Asian medicine for thousands of years to treat pain, possibly by activating the body's natural painkillers. But how it works at the cellular level is largely unknown. Using brain imaging, a University of Michigan study is the first to provide evidence that traditional Chinese acupuncture affects the brain's long-term ability to regulate pain. The results appear online ahead of print in the September Journal of NeuroImage.

Sodium Clodronate Improves Survival In Patients With Advanced Prostate Cancer But Not With Localised Disease
An article published Online First and in an upcoming edition of The Lancet Oncology reports that oral sodium clodronate improves overall survival in men with advanced prostate cancer. However it does not reduce the risk of death in men with localised disease. These are the final results of the MRC PR05 and MRC PR04 trials. Frequently, prostate cancer spreads to the bone. Bisphosphonates, such as sodium clodronate, is a group of drugs that prevent the loss of bone mass.

Impact Of Capsular Incision On Biochemical Recurrence After Radical Perineal Prostatectomy
UroToday.com - In the online edition of Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases, a group of Korean investigators report on the impact on biochemical recurrence (BR) of an iatrogenic prostatic capsular incision at the time of radical perineal prostatectomy (RPP). The study included 266 men who underwent RPP for prostate cancer (CaP) between 1995 and 2007, by a single surgeon. Nerve sparing was performed in 96 of these men.

Does Transrectal Ultrasound Probe Configuration Really Matter? End Fire Versus Side Fire Probe Prostate Cancer Detection Rates
UroToday.com - In the May 2009 issue of the Journal of Urology, Dr. Christina Ching and collaborators from the Cleveland Clinic report that the end-fire transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) probe improves biopsy detection rate of prostate cancer (CaP) compared to the side-fire probe. Between 2000 and 2008, 2,674 patients underwent prostate biopsy with one of the two types of probes. The analysis is a non-randomized, observational study.

Denosumab Treatment Of Prostate Cancer With Bone Metastases And Increased Urine N-Telopeptide Levels After Therapy With Intravenous Bisphosphonates
UroToday.com - Prostate cancer (CaP) has a predilection to metastasize to bone, resulting in skeletal-related events (SREs). The cancer cells interact with osteoclasts (bone resorption), and osteoblasts (bone formation) to create a vicious cycle of tumor growth and bone destruction. The receptor activator of NF-kB ligand (RANKL) is secreted by osteoblasts in response to tumor cells and is an essential mediator of osteoclast formation, function and survival.

Integrated Data From 2 Phase 3 Trials Of Active Cellular Immunotherapy With Sipuleucel-T In Advanced Prostate Cancer
UroToday.com - In the online edition of Cancer, Dr. Higano and collaborators report on the use of Sipuleucel-T in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer (CaP). Sipuleucel-T is an autologous active cellular immunotherapy that stimulates an immune response against CaP. It consists of autologous peripheral blood mononuclear cells, including antigen-presenting cells (APCs) that have been activated in vitro with recombinant fusion protein composed of prostatic acid phosphatase.

Young Early-Stage Ovarian Cancer Patients Can Conserve Fertility
A new study finds that young women with early-stage ovarian cancer can preserve future fertility by keeping at least one ovary or the uterus without increasing the risk of dying from the disease. The study is published in the September 15, 2009 issue of CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. Most cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed at later stages and in older women.

Association Of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Prostate Specific Antigen And Prostate Volume
UroToday.com - A group of investigators from Vanderbilt University investigated the link between nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), PSA and prostate volume. Their findings appear in the May, 2009 issue of the Journal of Urology. NSAIDs such as aspirin inhibit COX activity, which are rate limiting in the conversion of arachidonic acid to PGE2. PGE2 is known to increase cell proliferation in prostate tissue.

Erectile Aid Use By Men Treated For Localized Prostate Cancer
UroToday.com - A UCLA single-institution study in the online edition of the Journal of Urology reports on the use of erectile aid (EA) following treatment for localized prostate cancer (CaP). Participants with a diagnosis of CaP were prospectively recruited between 1999 and 2003. Clinical and pathological data was abstracted and HRQOL (Health Related Quality of Life) outcomes were prospectively abstracted at baseline and 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 months.

Combined Androgen Blockade With Bicalutamide For Advanced Prostate Cancer: Phase 3 Long-term Survival Follow-up, Double-blind, Randomized Study
UroToday.com - Use of an anti-androgen with castration for the treatment of prostate cancer (CaP) is referred to as combined androgen blockage (CAB). Use of CAB has been assessed in over 30 studies and a meta-analysis suggests that when non-steroidal anti-androgens are used there is a survival benefit with risk of death reduced by 8%.

Androgen Receptor Expression In Prostate Cancer Cells Is Suppressed By Activation Of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor And ErbB2
UroToday.com - In the online version of Cancer Research, a group of Harvard investigators report that the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor (EGFR) and tyrosine kinase ErbB2 can negatively regulate the androgen receptor (AR) in prostate cancer models. Previous studies suggest that EGFR and ErbB2 contribute to enhanced AR activity in the setting of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).

Functional Phenotyping And Genotyping Of Circulating Tumor Cells From Patients With Castration Resistant Prostate Cancer
UroToday.com - A major obstacle in understanding the biology of advanced prostate cancer is our limited ability to obtain metastatic tissue for study. As the majority of men are found to have prostate cancer prior to the development of metastasis, biopsy of metastatic disease for diagnostic purposes is usually clinically unnecessary.

The Use Of Immunofluorescence In Microdissection Testicular Sperm Extraction
UroToday.com - Microdissection testicular sperm extraction is a procedure used to extract sperm from patients with irreversible non-obstructive azospermia. Sperm extracted are then used for in vitro fertilization (IVF). While this technique has improved the sperm retrieval rate compared to other biopsy techniques, sperm are still often not retrieved. The purpose of our research was to develop a technique for identifying small foci of sperm for retrieval for use in IVF.
