Restore the Spleen Decoction

Main Action of Gui Pi Tang

This TCM herbal formula was created to tonify both the Qi and blood by strengthening the spleen Qi and heart blood. This chinese medicine formula is designed for treating deficiencies due to over thinking which damages the spleen Qi and creates a heart blood deficiency.

Indications and Symptoms for Gui Pi Tang

irritability, anxiety, insomnia, forgetfulness, poor memory, withdrawal, frequent dreams, heavy dreams, fear and anxiety, low grade fever, weakness, fatigue, poor appetite, diarrhea, weight loss (or gain), scanty menstruation, palpitations, pale or yellow complexion, chronic bleeding, early periods, prolonged period, pale menstrual bleeding.

Tongue – pale swollen body, thin white coating

Pulse – wiry, slippery, deep or thin and frail

Herbal Ingredients of Gui Pi Tang

Huang Qi (Radix Astragali Membranaceus, Milk Vetch Root, Astragalus) - 9-12g.

-tonify spleen Qi, tonify blood

Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, Ginseng) - 3-6g.

-tonify spleen Qi

Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractyloids Macrocephaeiae, Atractylodes (white) Rhizome) - 9-12g.

-tonify spleen Qi, dries dampness

Fu Shen (Sclerotium Porae Cocos Pararadicis, Poria Spirit) - 9-12g.

-calms spirit, tonify spleen

Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Chinese Angelica Root, tang-kuei) - 6-9g.

-tonify blood, regulate menstruation

Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae Lappae, Costus Root, Saussurea, Aucklandia) - 3-6g.

-regulates Qi

Long Yan Rou (Arillus Euphoriae Longanae, Flesh of the Longan Fruit, Longan) - 6-9g.

-tonify blood, calm spirit

Suan Zao Ren (Semen Zizyphi Spinosae, Sour Jujube Seed, Zizyphus) - 9-12g.

-calms spirit

Yuan Zhi (Radix Polygalae Tenuifoliae, Chinese Senega root, Polygala) - 3-6g.

-calms spirit, promotes heart Qi

Zhi Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, Licorice Root) - 3-6g.

-tonify spleen Qi

Cooking Preparation of Gui Pi Tang

coarsely grind all herbal ingredients and use 12 grams per draft. In each draft use five pieces of Sheng jiang and one piece of da zao. Ren Shen is usually replaced by two to three times the amount of Dang Shen and Fu Shen is usually replaced by Fu Ling.

Additional Information on Gui Pi Tang

as the spleen produces blood for the heart and is easily damaged by prolonged deliberation it can lead to heart blood deficiency. The spleen stores the intelligence and the heart stores the spirit and when they are deficient the patient looses the ability to concentrate properly.
